Outside of their art classes three 5th grade students and 3 6th grade students are working on a 4 by 8 foot mural after school that will become a permanent art work at the cruise port. In addition the Boston Society of Architects Foundation is having a Grant Project Pin-Up on April 12 and will be displaying our schoolyard mural created with a 2013 grant while it explores some of the projects that the Foundation has brought to life in communities around Greater Boston.

We are one month away from our Annual Art Show and the children are so excited to be able to show their hard work with everyone. This year, each class has been looking at the work of a well-known artist and is creating an art work inspired by that artist. On May 4th you will be seeing drawings, paintings, sculptures and assemblages which have been created in response to the art of Louise Nevelson, Laura Burch, Claes Oldenburg, Joseph Cornell, Yaakov Agam, Vincent Van Gogh and Frida Kahlo. Please don’t miss it, art is always best viewed in person!
Last week our latest Art Club mural was installed on the cafeteria wall. Completed by the Art Club Mural Squad it depicts the school, the beach, the park, even the Franklin Park Zoo and the upcoming Indy race track. The mural measures approximately 15 x 5 feet and is an amazing artwork!
Grade 3 had a great time playing the surrealism game call The Exquisite Corpse. Grade 6 painted and stuffed Mummy Selfies. In kindergarten shoe soles magically transformed into fish while in grade 5 students transformed everyday objects into monumental sculptures by the use of scale in their drawings. In grade 2 students have been using the new tempera cakes to experiment with color mixing! After an invite from scientists at Notre Dame University students in grades 1, 4 and 5 learned about exoplanets and designed newly discovered alien life forms. As a thank you, participating students received their own alien pop up toy from the scientists!

Being an art teacher is one of the greatest jobs in the world. Where else do you get to be with great kids and basically have fun all day long? Okay, there is work involved. To be an artist you must learn the language of art. Just like we learn the alphabet and put those letters together to form words and sentences before we can read books we need to learn the elements of art to help us to become lifelong  artists.
