Our students have created some amazing art works while investigating line over these past 2 weeks. This has been K2’s first regular visits to the artroom and they have jumped right in. Last week they created wonderful expressive monsters with line. This week they looked at Wassilly Kandinsky and are making concentric circles with glue, construction paper and scissors to play with color combinations.
We have been creating illusions with line in grade 2 and 4. Grade 4 created the illusion of a hand without actually drawing the hand while grade 2 used repeated pencil lines to create the illusion of forms that they transformed into Rapunzel’s hair, pumpkin stacks and even sunsets and reflections. In grade 1 students connected lines to create shapes which became landscapes. The finished pictures using construction crayons are just beautiful. Grades 5 and 6 made contour line drawings form life. Grade 5 drew their shoes and were then asked to send their lone shoe on a vacation somewhere in the world. Grade 6 was inspired by surrealism and Salvador Dali when they drew their hands and then transformed them in their drawings. In addition grade 6 has been working with their years’ theme “all about me” to take some selfies and create personal emojis with the art room mini iPads. Please remember to visit Artsonia to see all our art work and make sure you register so your child’s art work is visible on the site.

Our art classes will be creating Pinwheels for Peace as their first art project this year. Pinwheels for Peace is an art installation project started in 2005 by Ann Ayers and Ellen McMillan, who were art teachers at Monarch High School in Coconut Creek, Florida, as a way for their students to express their feelings about what’s going on in the world and in their lives.
The first Pinwheels for Peace were installed on Sept. 21, 2005. Since then, they have grown from 500,000 pinwheels planted the first year, to four million pinwheels in 2015! Here is a template link to print and create your own pinwheel. Welcome back to school everyone. I'm looking forward to an exciting new year fill with art history, art making and fun projects.
We will continue to put all student art work on Artsonia.com but there has been a change to "parent permissions" on the website. Regardless of whether you have signed up before, you must give permission to allow your child's art to be seen on the website. I will be sending registration links to you over the next week. See below:
It was kismet that on the day that artist Audrey Condon visited grade 6 to talk about her work as an animator that Google celebrated artist Lotte Reininger. As Ms. Condon explained, Lotte made cut paper silhouette animations that predated Walt Disney by a decade. Here’s a link to a short animation about Lotte, made by Google artists. During her visit, Audrey showed examples of her work, talked about her education and training as well as showing how she created some of her special effects. Grade 5 students made individual claymations, some of which are already on YouTube. Now that they know the software and techniques I look forward to having them delve deeper into animation next year as 6th graders!
Students in grade 4 came up with some novel ideas for their board games. I was hoping we would have a chance to play them in class but the time has just flown. Hopefully they will share them with their families for game night at home. In grade 3 we completed our Egyptian project by creating golden, jeweled bracelets made from recycled paper towel rolls. In grade 1 students created their own “Polaroid cameras” complete with instant film. The cameras were made from cardboard and paper towel rolls which were filled with film (a strip of paper with funny pictures drawn on it)! Grade 2 has finished the year learning how to create a sense of perspective with both “falling picture” and fields of gradually diminishing poppies. In our final K2 class students drew the scariest sharks I have ever seen! Looks like it will be a while before I go swimming again. I hope everyone has an art-filled vacation! See you in September. So much has been going on that I haven’t had a chance to update everyone. The Art Show was a great success. The children were so proud of all their hard work! Art works will be making their way home in the near future. They looks so lovely in the cafeteria that we hate to see them leave.
Our mural was installed at Mass Port! Students from last year’s painting event and this year’s mural painting were present at the unveiling and enjoyed meeting Ambassador Flynn and many more of our local politicians. Let’s not forget the pizza, live Calypso music and balloon artists! The art room is being updated with new (to us) tables which the children seem to love. I’m hoping to carefully plan and rearrange it with different art centers before the year is out. Grade one has been painting pussy willows and designing colorful vases for them this week. In grade 1 we are making Black Forest Clocks and creating wood look paper with special brushes and paint. Grade 2A has started painting fields of poppies while 2B worked on drawing “falling pictures” (picture day, no paint please!). In grade 3 we have been learning how to draw like an Egyptian after reading one of my favorite books “Who Built the Pyramids” by Meredith Hooper. Grade 4 is designing board games which they will create and then play in class. In grade 5 we are doing Claymation! I look forward to sharing the finished videos with you. In the meantime check out this silly stop motion animation we created in 5B. Our grade 6 just completed their James Rizzi style cityscapes. They did an awesome job and the pictures have been a big attraction hung in the hallway. Please stop by Artsonia and check out all the latest stuff! Outside of their art classes three 5th grade students and 3 6th grade students are working on a 4 by 8 foot mural after school that will become a permanent art work at the cruise port. In addition the Boston Society of Architects Foundation is having a Grant Project Pin-Up on April 12 and will be displaying our schoolyard mural created with a 2013 grant while it explores some of the projects that the Foundation has brought to life in communities around Greater Boston.
We are one month away from our Annual Art Show and the children are so excited to be able to show their hard work with everyone. This year, each class has been looking at the work of a well-known artist and is creating an art work inspired by that artist. On May 4th you will be seeing drawings, paintings, sculptures and assemblages which have been created in response to the art of Louise Nevelson, Laura Burch, Claes Oldenburg, Joseph Cornell, Yaakov Agam, Vincent Van Gogh and Frida Kahlo. Please don’t miss it, art is always best viewed in person!
Last week our latest Art Club mural was installed on the cafeteria wall. Completed by the Art Club Mural Squad it depicts the school, the beach, the park, even the Franklin Park Zoo and the upcoming Indy race track. The mural measures approximately 15 x 5 feet and is an amazing artwork! Grade 3 had a great time playing the surrealism game call The Exquisite Corpse. Grade 6 painted and stuffed Mummy Selfies. In kindergarten shoe soles magically transformed into fish while in grade 5 students transformed everyday objects into monumental sculptures by the use of scale in their drawings. In grade 2 students have been using the new tempera cakes to experiment with color mixing! After an invite from scientists at Notre Dame University students in grades 1, 4 and 5 learned about exoplanets and designed newly discovered alien life forms. As a thank you, participating students received their own alien pop up toy from the scientists! Please remember to activate your account at Artsonia.com where we have almost 28,000 works of art!!!
