Congratulations to grade 6 on completion of their cut paper animation entitled “When I think of South Boston…” which shows the positive side of their neighborhood. For many years Southie has been portrayed on screen in a way that is unflattering and unfamiliar to most of the people who know it best, the children who live and go to school here. This is their view. As you would expect, they premiered their film over popcorn and more candy then you could imagine.

In the after-school art club, the mural squad is impatiently waiting for their completed work to be installed in the cafeteria. Here is just a little preview of the 15 x 5 foot painting!

Grade 3 made a completed a questionnaire about themselves and brought in items for their “found object” self-portraits that were inspired by the work of artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo. Each item they used was supposed to be symbolic and would help to describe who they are!

In several grades, thanks to an invite from the outreach coordinator for the University of Notre Dame’s “iLocator” astronomy project which is creating a new type of camera for discovering planets around other stars, we learned about exoplanets and designed organisms that would be living there. We have sent all (97 in total) our drawings and scientific explanations off to Notre Dame!

Being an art teacher is one of the greatest jobs in the world. Where else do you get to be with great kids and basically have fun all day long? Okay, there is work involved. To be an artist you must learn the language of art. Just like we learn the alphabet and put those letters together to form words and sentences before we can read books we need to learn the elements of art to help us to become lifelong  artists.
